I’m not as bad as people think—Bimbo Akintola

Bimbo-Akintola
YES! International Magazine Ceo AZUH ARINZE ran into her weeks back at the Akwa Ibom International Airport and couldn’t resist asking her for an impromptu chat which she gladly obliged.
Massively misunderstood, Bimbo has a good heart; she’s also very frank and always fun to be with…
Excerpts From YES! Magazine.
What makes a good actress?
Your ability to get into character, your ability to identify a character, understand the character and be the character.
What is your definition of acting?
Becoming somebody else for the purpose of telling a story.
Where do most actresses miss it?
I think they never really know who their characters are, they don’t understand who they are playing, because sometimes you get a script that doesn’t give you the background story of the character that you are playing. It is your duty as an actor to do the background story – where’s the person from? You can tell these things pretty easy. By the way the person speaks, you would know if they were educated. For the family background, you would know the kind of schools they went to – primary schools; this gives you an idea of the sort of circles that they moved in and the sort of person that they should be. But most people don’t think about it – the character. They don’t want to understand the character, they do not totally become the character.

The House of Representatives on Thursday asked its ad-hoc committee to investigate the alleged N59tn shady oil deal involving the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited and officials of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Corporation.
The deal is said to include the “secret and arbitrary farm-out” of Oil Mining Leases 4, 26, 30, 34, 38, 41 and 42 to two firms, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Limited and Septa Energy Limited, without following due process.
A member of the House from Anambra State, Mr. Victor Ogene, who raised the issue under matters of urgent public importance, recalled that the deal was the reason protesters from oil producing communities in Delta State marched on the National Assembly on April 25, 2013.
Ogene alleged that Alison-Madueke, SPDC and NPDC officials worked in collaboration with the firms to farm out the marginal oil fields.

Land dispute: Turai Yar’Adua floors Patience Jonathan

Mrs. Turai Yar’Adua and Mrs. Patience Jonathan

AN Abuja High Court on Thursday declared as null and void the revocation of a plot of land allocated to Turai Yar’Adua by the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT had revoked the Abuja land allocation in favour of  Mrs Patience Jonathan, the current president’s wife.
The court therefore revoked the notice of revocation issued to Turai by the FCT Administration on the plot with the judge, Peter Affen, ruling that taking the land from Turai, wife of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and reallocating same to Mrs. Jonathan served no public interest.
Affen held that “the revocation issued by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Sen. Bala Mohammed, was invalid, null and void’’ and that the plaintiff’s (Turai’s) right of occupancy over the 1.84 hectares of land remained valid and subsisting.
“There is no regular and proper overriding public interest to warrant the purported revocation,’ the judge ruled, adding that it was the dispute between the plaintiff and Mrs. Jonathan that led to the purported revocation.

Jonathan ready to forgo second term –Presidency

President Goodluck Jonathan

THE Presidency on Wednesday said President Goodluck Jonathan was ready to forget his ambition to run for second term in 2015 if the Senate passed its proposal for a single non-renewable six-year tenure into law.
Though Jonathan had made half-hearted denial of his ambition for another term in office, the body movements of the President and his loyalists had clearly shown that he was preparing to run in the 2015 general election.
But the President’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said the ambition to stage a return would be shelved if Senators decided in favour of a single term for the President and state governors.
Gulak who spoke to The PUNCH in Abuja said, “Nigerians will remember that it was President Jonathan that suggested an idea of a single term tenure from the beginning. So if the proposal becomes a law, the credit should go to the President.

Metuh said the governor was, however, consistently turned down by his party.
He urged Oshiomhole “to be bold enough to tell Nigerians how many times he begged to join the PDP but was turned down.”
He added, “The same PDP which Adams went on all fours, begging to join on several occasions has suddenly become the ‘party of rogues’ because of his desperation to justify the massive rigging and democratic aberration that was local government elections in Edo State.

Two more ‘I don port’ videos surface on YouTube

Port

As the phrase, ‘I don port’ gradually finds its way into the vocabulary of Nigerians home and abroad, thanks to the new MTN Nigeria commercial on mobile number portability,  two more videos of ‘I don port’ have found their way to YouTube.
The new videos are different from the one in which ace comedian, Hafeez Oyetoro, popularly called Saka, played the lead role in the commercial.
One of the videos is with the title, ‘Free style I don port dance contest’ while the other one carries the title, “Group two I don port dance contest.”
‘Free style I don port dance contest’ video, which has attracted 4,159 views, is a 28-second video, shot in an office setting and has 11 people dancing to the rhythm of Saka’s version of the “I don port” commercial.
The “Group two I don port dance contest” has 12 people clad in customised black T-shirts, also dancing to the rhythm of the new MTN commercial-in a 56-second video. So far, 2,856 people have viewed the video.
MTN had asked its customers to form themselves into groups and create their own “I don port” videos to win BlackBerry Z10 phones and recharge cards worth N150, 0000. More of such user-generated contents are expected to find their way to YouTube.
A check on Saka’s ‘I don port’ advert on MTN’s YouTube channel shows that within six days of putting the video on the social media, 97,523 people have  viewed it, making  the video the telecoms company’s most viewed commercial on the video-sharing website.

Nigeria in ‘trying moment’ — Jonathan

Goodluck-JonathanAbuja- President Goodluck Jonathan Monday declared that Nigeria is currently going through a trying moment in terms of security. “This is a trying moment in this country in terms of security challenges”, the president said while commissioning seven helicopters, 500 patrol vans, and armoured personnel vehicles at the grand parade of the Police week, 2013 in Abuja.
He said “a lot of policemen have lost their lives to terrorism attacks. Let me use this opportunity to condole families of those who lost their lives. I want to assure you (families) that government will continue to care for the loved ones left behind”.
Stressing that the helicopters and patrol vans are necessary tools for the police to perform creditably, Jonathan said, “I expect these equipment will help improve the response time to distress calls to the police. I also want to advise the police to improve on the maintenance capability of the force. I have observed that the armed forces, now have very good and formidable teams that maintain their equipment and facilities. The police should do same”.
According to him, the imperatives of the deadly security challenges confronting the nation in the area of terrorism, kidnapping and other heinous crimes has made it expedient that the 36 states of the country acquire helicopters for the 36 Police Commands.
He noted that the Nigeria Police has a duty to protect the citizens from the land, air and sea and
urged the police authorities to continue to ensure training of the officers and men on modern policing methods that will take into account, the democratic environment of the nation. He added that what Nigerians want is a people friendly police force that is timely in response time to distress.
In his address, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar warned the criminal community in the country to brace up for a renewed crackdown by the Nigerian Police, following the wind of change that is now blowing through the force.
According to the IG, “A cultural re-orientation that is premised on adoption of international best policing practices is emerging, and the new police force will display team spirit, loyalty, zeal, courage, civility and renewed commitment towards confronting criminal elements”.
Declaring that the long term intention and strategic justification for the police week celebration which is coming up after 37 years absence is to commence the process of restoring the lost glory of the force, the IG said, “the essence is to remind police officers that their efficiency rest solely on the extent of bonding with the public whom they are paid to protect.
“Inversely, the people have to accept the fact that no matter the level of private security contraption sewn around themselves, they still need a body of men and women, they can trust and rely on to protect the public space”, he said.

Jonathan insensitive to Baga killings – El-Rufai

El-Rufai

A former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai,  on Sunday accused  the Federal Government of being insensitive to the plight of the  people  of Baga, Borno State.
He said it was saddening that the government was busy disputing the  number of  people  killed in a clash between members of Boko Haram and a military task force instead of  alleviating their suffering.
Government had said only 25 people died and not  185  reported by the media as the casualty figure in the mayhem penultimate Saturday.
Fielding questions from journalists  after at the 50th birthday reception in honour of a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, el-Rufai said God would hold those in government accountable for their actions.
He said,  “It is unfortunate that we place so little values on human lives that we will be arguing whether six Nigerians have died or 185 or 200.

FG orders sack of 20,000 PHCN workers

phcn-protest nepa staff worker

THE Federal Government has ordered the retrenchment of no fewer than 20,000 workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, ahead of takeover by successful bidders of its assets.
Vanguard gathered that the Bureau for Public Enterprises, BPE, issued the directive to the Chief Executive Officers, CEOs, of the 18 successor companies to PHCN at a meeting in Abuja, to compile names and drastically reduce the 50,000 strong workforce before the new investors take over.
It was gathered that new investors demanded that the workforce must be pruned before government hands off.

Though it is not clear how government arrived at this figure, however, General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Mr Joe Ajaero, who confirmed the directive to massively retrench the workforce, said it was obvious that the Federal Government had decided to truncate the implementation of the collective agreement reached with the unions.
