NDLEA arrests Lagos tailor with N29m worth of cocaine

Ahmadu Giade, NDLEA boss

Olowe Moshood Adebesin, a 41-year-old tailor from Ogun State was recently arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in connection with the smuggling of cocaine.
NET gathered that the arrest was made at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos by airport officials, on Olowe’s return flight from Brazil.
The substance was discovered in his luggage during the inward screening of passengers on a Turkish Airline flight.
NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar says the suspect with Nigeria international passport number A00745969 was apprehended during routine check.
According to him, ‘Olowe who travelled to Brazil in March 2012 was arrested during routine search of passengers. In the process of search, some substance found in his bag tested positive to cocaine. We have commenced investigation and he will be charged to court soon’.
However, the suspect has opened up claiming ownership of the drug. In his words, ‘I am a tailor at Lagos Island. I am married with 3 children. Life is unfriendly to me that I cannot feed my family. The people that sponsored me promised to pay me N2m. I agreed to smuggle the drugs because the money will change my life. I wanted the best for my family and I never knew things will turn out this way. My intention was to start importing clothes from China with the money but I was not lucky’.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade warned drug traffickers of the consequences of the criminal act. ‘Drug trafficking is not a game of luck. We shall continue to arrest drug traffickers and prosecute them. We support the culture of success through legitimate business. Those who are in a hurry to get wealth through criminality will end up in prison custody. The suspect is only being greedy and he will face the consequences of his action. He should have weighed the gravity of the offence because the family he loves and seeks to protect, same he had abandoned today’. The NDLEA boss also called on members of the public to report suspected cases of illicit drugs to the Agency.
We’re told the banned drug recovered from the suspect weighed 2.700kg and has a street value of N29m.

Once, While Still In School, I Didn’t Brush For Two Weeks - Teju Babyface

Teju Jacobs Oyelakin are his real names, but many know him as Teju Babyface. He took the industry by storm when he came out with his unique personality TV show called Teju Babyface Show which has today become an international TV show. Today, Teju is no doubt one of the achievers in the Nigerian comedy/ entertainment industry and a promising fellow. He had a chat with Adunola Oladapo where he spoke on marriage and other issues

How did you come about the name Teju Babyface and for how long would you want it to stick?
Well, as the Bible says, 'the vision is yet for an appointed time'. So, the name Babyface is for an era. Who knows? Perhaps, we begin to approach the end of that era where 'Babyface' is the substantive element of my name. After all these days I refer to myself as Teju Babyface Jacobs.

You were a face to reckon with in the movie, Diamond Ring, and doing well in acting. However,  you have diversified into comedy and now TV presentation; would you still go back into acting?About movies, the truth is that contrary to what you may think, I don't like to act that much. Maybe comedy has spoilt me. You see, in comedy there are no do-overs. No second takes and repeat renditions of the same joke in the same gathering. The longest event is never more than seven hours. Movies take weeks!!! So, I'm involved with comedy and my show, strictly for now.

So bye to acting for life?Kind of.

How many movies did you feature in before turning a stand-up comedian and now a TV personality?Just one movie, Diamond Ring.

Really, but you did so good in the movie?Well, but my passion belongs to comedy and the TV show.

What challenges did you face while coming up?The challenge was that at the time I was starting out, my brand of comedy seemed to be before its time. When you add a baby face's look to that, it was fairly hard to break through on some stages. I had to do twice the work most times. What used to bother me was that I had to keep proving myself over and over again. Having said that, however, the challenges are there so that they can be surmounted, yes? I am glad for the issues I had to deal with as they were the pointers that led me in the direction that I now travel.

He is a liar, I healed him - Pastor Sign Fireman attacks Enebeli Elebuwa

Some things are stranger than fiction – in this case, a flambuoyant pastor and a sick actor (and national treasure) are fighting over the matter of a fake healing.
It started with a YouTube video, purportedly showing Pastor Sign Fireman of the Perfect Christianity Ministry (who has been known to advertise ‘the hottest babes come to my church’) healing the very ill (of a stroke) veteran actor, Enebeli Elebuwa who was seen on his feet.
But last week, the actor spoke from his hospital bed in Abuja, and he says: the pastor is a liar.
According to Vanguard:
The last may not have been heard about the controversial healing of ailing veteran actor, Enebeli Enebuwa who has been down with stroke for more than a year now by the general overseer of Perfect Christianity Ministry, Surulere, Pastor Sign Fireman.
Enebeli, last week still on his sickbed debunked the news making the rounds that he has received his healing, courtesy of the controversial pastor.
Reacting to the story, the ailing actor, who is still on admission in an  Abuja hospital admitted that he visited the man of God. But he maintained that despite the visit, his condition didn’t improve as captured in the video allegedly released on Youtube by the pastor.
Pastor Fireman, however, isn’t letting this go with a dose of Christian charity. He held a press       conference last week to clear the air, and tell his own side to the story:

Dana Crash: Black box findings will be ready in 2013

The findings from the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), otherwise known as the black box, of the crashed Dana Air plane of June 3, 2012, would not be ready for at least 12 months. According to officials of the Ministry of Aviation, this is not an anomaly, but in line with global practices in the aviation industry.
The two black boxes of the ill-fated flight which claimed the lives of over 200 persons were flown to the United States of America on Thursday for decoding by experts at the Accident Investigations Bureau (AIB) in New York.
Though the final report would not be released till 2013, a preliminary report of findings might be released before then.

Fuel subsidy report: Farouk Lawan may have accepted 600000 dollar bribe

Marked notes, secret taping, and bribery of corrupt leaders – all hallmarks of a thrilling espionage movie. It may also be the first chapter in a case against that might be building against the chairman of the House of Representative’s ad-hoc committee on petroleum subsidy, Hon. Farouk Lawan.
Once seen as the tough head of the committee trying to bring clarity to the murky fuel subsidy waters, Lawan has allegedly been caught on video accepting a $600,000 bribe from an unnamed oil company last month.
According to Vanguard, speaker of the House, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal called Lawan to a meeting with the “principal officers” of the ad-hoc committee and the chairman was presented with the allegation, where he was forced to defend himself.
At first Lawan denied the accusation, but was startled and “froze in shock” when confronted with the news that the entire incident was taped and that the bills he allegedly received were all marked, according to the Vanguard.
Tambuwal obtained the video after the oil company gave copies of the video to a former head of state, who in turn gave it to the speaker of the House.

Interesting...can't believe this, anyway let's wait for 'authentication'.

Relief materials create confusion

Relief materials brought by the management of Dana Airlines to alleviate the plight of displaced residents of the crash site caused confusion on Friday.
While the Dana delegation wanted to hand over the materials to the village head for proper distribution, some of the victims insisted that they would get them directly to serve the purpose they were meant for.
The materials, which included mattresses, pillows, bed sheets, beverages, noodles, soaps, blankets, buckets and cutleries, were brought by three directors of the airline.
The Dana delegation included Head of Corporate Communication, Tony Usidamen; Head of Administration, Anand Bangarsamy; two directors, Gautam Hathiramani and Francis Ogboro; and Jagjit Sundaram of cabin services.
The confusion arose over a list of displaced persons prepared by the Community Development Association of the area, which was represented by the chairman, Adewale Oriowo.
But another resident, Chike Okwuosa, who claimed to be the host of most of the displaced persons, said he did not believe in any list prepared by anybody.
While the Dana delegation wanted to take the relief materials to the village chief for onward distribution to the victims, Okwuosa insisted that the victims, most of whom he said were on ground, should get the materials to avoid a situation where those who were not affected getting everything.
This caused a  disagreement and shouting match before it was resolved that the CDA should be left to handle the distribution.
Okwuosa, who said he was not a victim, but a concerned neighbour, told SATURDAY PUNCH that he was only trying to make sure that the distribution of the materials was not mired in controversy.
“By God’s grace, I am not a victim, but I have been accommodating some of these people who have lost everything they have. I want Dana to give whatever they brought as relief materials to those that are directly affected, not to some people on a list that I don’t know anything about.

Blackout @Abuja Airport grounds flights, leaves passengers stranded

Runway lights at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja went off yesterday evening stalling the landing and taking off of planes. All the international planes that were meant to land at the airport in Abuja yesterday were re-routed to Lagos and Port Harcourt. Lufthansa, British Airways, and Air France flights had to land in Lagos where passengers where offered accommodation, while an Arik Flight coming from Port Harcourt was forced to return to PH.

This is the third time this year that blackouts will be recorded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and they are yet to find a permanent solution to it. I think the aviation industry needs a total overhauling; starting with the resignation of the minister in charge of the sector!

Priest found dead in Benue bush

A Methodist Church pastor at Ago, Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Council of Benue State, Rev Michael Ejeh, was on Monday morning, found dead in a bush. According to his wife, Charity Ejeh, the bush was just few meters away from a church he’d visited the previous day for prayers and deliverance services.
Mrs Ejeh said that her deceased husband, who suffered from hypertension, had gone to a deliverance ministry headed by Prophet Moses Ujah at Odebe which was where his body was found.
An informer in the area, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian, which first broke the story,  that Rev. Ejeh was allegedly found tied to a tree in a bush some metres away from Prophet Ujah’s church where he’d gone to the bush to ease himself.
The Guardian also gathered that Rev. Ejeh, after the prayers on the fateful night had requested to sleep in Odeba, as it was late for him to return to his base, Ago. Ujah reportedly accepted to host the late reverend and directed two of his pastors to keep the priest’s company through the night at the ministry’s office.
The remains of the late priest have been deposited at a mortuary in Otukpa while the police have arrested Ujah for questioning.
Meanwhile the Benue Police Public Relations Officer, Philip Agena, said he hasn’t been briefed on the incident.

Husband sues plane manufacturer for wife’s death

The husband of a Nigerian woman who died in the crash of a Nigerian airliner that killed 153 people has filed a lawsuit in the US blaming those who designed and manufactured the plane for the accident, AP reported on Thursday.
Attorney Gary Robb filed the lawsuit Thursday in federal court in Chicago for David Chukwunonso Allison. The lawsuit says Allison’s wife, Joy Chiedozie Allison, was on the Dana Air MD-83 that crashed in Nigeria on Sunday.
The suit names Chicago-based Boeing Co., which bought the McDonnell-Douglas manufacturer of the plane. It also names Connecticut-based engine-maker Pratt & Whitney.
Robb says reports of engine failure point the finger of blame at the companies.
Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Thursday in Abuja described Nigeria as “a dumping ground for deficient aircraft.”
To bring sanity into the nation’s aviation sector, SSANU suggested the merger and acquisition of airlines.
The President of the union, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, in a statement, said the policy was the only way the aviation industry could bounce back to reckoning.

Dog rescues abandoned infant under a bridge in Ghana

The rescued newborn
A farm dog was hailed a hero after it was discovered that he protected a two-week-old baby abandoned by the mother under a bridge in Winkongo, near Bolgatanga in the Upper East regional capital of Ghana.

Officials say the dog spent the night watching over the child under the bridge. The dog had gone missing for hours and the owner sent out a search party into the forest to find him. The dog was found in the morning under a bridge, near the owner's farm, with the newborn deriving warmth by nuzzling against its fur.

The baby himself is in relatively good health after his adventure. His umbilical cord had not been cut, and had gotten infected, but the infant was otherwise unharmed; he's since had all his vaccinations, and is currently in the custody of a local health directorate until new, non-bridge arrangements can be made for him.

Police are investigating. (Ghana News Agency)

Bridge collapses in Enugu, cuts off 1m residents

The Abakpa-Nike main bridge, built shortly after the Nigerian civil war, collapsed on Wednesday night June 6th after heavy rainfall, cutting off one million residents of the city. Fortunately, no life was lost in the mishap.

The State Govt has deployed construction workers to site to rebuild the bridge

The Apple iCar...iphone,ipad now meet the Icar

Former Apple boss Steve Jobs also wanted a slice of the car industry, according to an Apple board member.
Apple's Mickey Drexler talked about Jobs' desire to add an automobile to the company's product lineup at a recent interview during the Fast Company Innovation Uncensored expo in New York.
"Look at the car industry - it's a tragedy in America," Drexler says. "They talk about expense, they talk about this - and then you say, well ‘who's designing the cars?' Steve's dream, before he died, was to design an iCar."
Drexler predicted that if Jobs had designed the car, it would have dominated the industry.
"It would've been probably 50 per cent of the market," Drexler says. "He never did design it."
Apple has been rumoured to be working on an iCar for years. In 2007, Steve Jobs met with Volkswagen Group head Martin Winterkorn. The companies were reportedly planned to team up to work on a car aimed at the youth market.
VW has since introduced a budget-conscious small car aimed at the younger crowd, the Up, that may not have been developed with Apple but does feature an iPad-inspired dash-top tablet display.
While Jobs reportedly never penned his ideas for a car, many designers have envisioned what an Apple-branded car could be like, including 22-year-old transport design student Liviu Tudoran.
His three-seater iMove plug-in electric concept car features loads of Apple-inspired gadgetry including a "photocromic" exterior that allows the driver to change the colour of the car, a touch-screen display that covers the entire dashboard (charged by solar receptors in the glass), and a convertible roof that can open up and has been designed to resemble the Apple mouse.
While it's no iCar, Apple recently filed a patent on a new steering wheel-mounted Bluetooth-based remote controller for its devices that it hopes will reduce driver distraction.

I almost died when Jonathan renamed UNILAG – Ibidapo-Obe

former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos and now Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Ndufe-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe
A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos and now Vice-Chancellor of  Federal University, Ndufe-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, in this interview with Olabisi Deji-Folutile says universities  are usually named after cities because they play historical roles
As a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, what is your opinion of the UNILAG brand?
The name, University of Lagos, is a global brand and it took many years of hard work to build this brand.  It took us 50 years to develop the UNILAG brand. We have all worked very hard to get the university to its present status. I remember when I took over as the VC in 2000, I worked very hard to change the level of the university as Eko for Show to another level. I coined the slogan- the university of first choice and now the university is the university of first choice in Nigeria. The proof of that is that the university is the most subscribed university in Nigeria and 1/3 of candidates applying for the top courses choose UNILAG.  UNILAG is the nation’s pride, we should develop and nurture it. Clearly you can put it side by side with any university in Africa.
How did you feel when you learnt about the change of name?
I almost died when I heard the announcement. The university community would have buried two people. It was  really painful and for me it was double pain  because I was mourning my friend, the late VC. My consolation is that it will help me to retain the memory of my friend, at least each time this issue comes to mind, I would remember it was the time my friend died.  And that is what we are saying. Again the timing was very bad. Here is a community mourning the VC and just this devastating news again, it is bad.
