President Jonathan under pressure to sack ‘bad aides’

jonathan goodluck
Presidential aides deemed not to have added value to activities of government and the promotion of the image of President Goodluck Jonathan may be sacked any moment from now following security reports on acts of misdemeanors levelled against some of them, Saturday Tribune can report.
The need for President Jonathan to demonstrate seriousness and commitment to his ambition for reelection in 2015 is one of the reasons he may ease off aides in this category, according to recent findings.
He has, of late, commenced reconciliatory moves with aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), mending fences with former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his last visit to the General’s residence in Abeokuta, and is said to be making moves to meet more retired Generals on the same initiatives.
A serving minister told Saturday Tribune that apart from security reports that variously indicted many of the presidential aides and certain cabinet members, reports from aggrieved elders of the PDP had pointed towards the excesses of some of the aides.

The commission warned affected DISCOs that failure to comply with the ultimatum would compel it to institute enforcement procedures that may result in the removal of their Chief Executive Officers.
It said the ultimatum became necessary because some companies had perpetually violated its order to submit a list of all customers, who paid for meters since January 2011 and commence the issuance of meters to them.

Fire guts Kenya airport

Firefighters and stranded passengers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, Kenya...on Wednesday.
A fire engulfed Kenya’s main airport on Wednesday, forcing the suspension of international passenger flights and choking a vital travel gateway to east Africa.
The country’s anti-terror police boss said he did not believe that there was a terror link to the fire even though it coincided with the 15th anniversary of a twin attack by Islamist militants on the United States embassy in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of neighboring Tanzania.
Authorities said they will on Thursday begin preparing the airport’s domestic terminal, which escaped the blaze, for handling international flights, using tents to create extra space. Domestic flights had resumed by Wednesday evening, and outward-bound cargo flights were due to resume hours later.
The raging blaze engulfed the terminal buildings and lit up the early morning sky, sending billowing clouds of black smoke rising in a plume that was visible from miles away.
The intense heat repeatedly drove back firefighters who battled for five hours to put out the fire, the worst on record at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, east Africa’s busiest.

No ghost workers in Ondo – Labour

mimiko Ondo State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress  and the Trade Union Congress Union Congress declared on Wednesday that there were no ghost workers in the state civil service contrary to the claims by the state government.
The government had claimed last week that it had been saving N500m monthly after it had discovered that 10,000 ghost workers were being paid salaries every month across the 18 local government councils of the state.
But the workers, at a joint news briefing by the state chairman of NLC, Mrs. Bosede Daramola and the chairman of TUC, Mr. Soladoye Ekundayo, in Akure, described the state’s claim as highly unfortunate.
The civil servants also said contrary to the claim of the state government, that local government workers had been paid their June and July salaries, the workers had yet to be paid.
For instance, Daramola said 3,000 of the 6,000 workers which were said to have been indicted by the Deji Falae-committee, had been cleared.

Any party that fields Jonathan’ll lose —APC

Goodluck JonathanThe All Progressives Congress  on Wednesday continued its war of words  with  the Presidency and the  Peoples Democratic Party over the suitability  of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan  for the presidential election.
While the APC believes that  fielding  Jonathan as a candidate would be suicidal for any party, the Presidency and the PDP argued  that he remains the best to contest and win a presidential poll in the country at present.
The latest war of attrition  was spurred by   Tuesday’s invitation  to the President by the APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, to join the newly formed political party if he was fed up with the crises  in  the PDP.
Akande  had said,  “We (the APC) don’t even close our door to the PDP. If Jonathan is tired of the crises in the PDP, he is welcome in the APC.”

Students-Protest_10The strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on July 1, 2013 has indeed tested the boundaries of student unionism. From the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to other realms of student activism, conflicting perceptions reflect students’ reaction to the ASUU strike. This report brings the different voices to the fore.
It would be recalled that last executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, led by the National Assistant Secretary, Mr. Ali Mohammed disowned the national president, Mr. Yinka Gbadebo, on what they referred to as “his support for the Federal Government in the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.” Some members of the executive told newsmen that students were largely unbiased in the crisis and the inclination of Mr. Gbadebo to support the government was a deviation from the students’ collective goal of resolving the crisis.

THE nation was shocked when, earlier  last week, it was reported that the Benin Airport was closed down. Hundreds of air  travellers going and coming from all parts of the world were subjected to an embarrassing, inconveniencing and humiliating thwarting of their travel plans without any prior notice. They met an airport that was under lock and key, with no one around to explain why.
Information came out later  that it was the Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who ordered the shutting down of the airport over the failure of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to pay tenement rates due to the state government. Sanity, however, prevailed when a day later, the Director General, Mr George Uriesi, went in company of top executives of FAAN to meet with and apologise to Comrade Oshiomhole for roles the Authority played which led to the incident.
