Court Grants Baba Suwe Bail

Following an order by Justice Yetunde Idowu of the Ikeja High Court to National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to produce Babatunde Omidina also known as Baba Suwe on Wednesday 26 October, the Agency today produced the comedian suspected of drug trafficking to the court premises.

The order was granted following an ex-parte motion filed by the actor's counsel, Mr Bamidele Aturu.

Actors and actresses laid siege at the court to support their estranged colleague who has been in NDLEA custody for over three weeks.

Justice Idowu, after the hearing granted bail to the comedian in the sum of 500,000 naira but insisted it will take effect from the 4th of November 2011.

The NDLEA were earlier granted the permission to detain the comedian for another 15 days after they discovered what they considered “more evidence” by a Federal High Court in Lagos presided by Justice Okechukwu Okeke on 21 October 2011.

The existing order ends on 4th November 2011 and will immediately give way to the just delivered judgement to take effect immediately.

Baba Suwe had filed a N100 million suit against NDLEA over his arrest and detention by the agency on October 12, seeking a declaration that his arrest was in gross violation of his rights.

The N100 million being demanded by the actor is compensation from the NDLEA for the alleged illegal and unconstitutional violation of his fundamental rights by the agency.
