The revenue sharing formula recently became a subject of fierce debate when northern governors called for its review and criticised the huge allocation” to the oil-producing states.
But the oil-producing states and groups in the Niger Delta have faulted the demand of the North, saying it is divisive.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, in an interview with one of our correspondents, explained that the House would be guided by the wishes of Nigerians in addressing the issue.
However, he said that there was no request yet before the House on the issue.
“It has not been brought before the House yet. Whenever it comes before us, it will be subjected to debate. From the views expressed during the debate, it will be easy to know what Nigerians want. The focus of this House is to support any issue that will improve the lives of Nigerians,” Mohammed added.
He also spoke on the allegation of lopsided allocation of projects in the 2012 budget in favour of the South-South geopolitical zone. President Goodluck Jonathan is from the South-South.
The House spokesman said the allegation of lopsidedness in project citing in the South-South would be investigated in the course of studying the budget.
“The budget is a tentative proposal; it is not final yet. We will address all the issues raised collectively. Rather than allow anything to divide us, we shall put our personal and regional interests aside for what will unite the country”, he added.
