The
number of inactive telephone lines in the country has continued to
increase and has hit the 40.4 million mark, the latest subscriber data
released on Tuesday by the Nigerian Communications Commission has
revealed.
The data also revealed that about 12.7 million telephone lines went redundant in November 2012
The NCC data showed that in January,
February, March and April 2012, the inactive lines were 31.9 million,
35.2 million, 35.8 million and 35 million, respectively.
In May, the figure fell to 34.6 million,
indicating that many subscribers made calls from their old lines or
activated new lines that month.
Inactive lines, according to the NCC
data, increased further to 33.7 million in June, 37 million in July and
38 million in August 2012.
The figure rose to 28.6 million and 40.4 million at the end of October and November last year.
This, according to experts, represents the highest so far in Nigeria.
