The
Nigeria Boxing Federation expects the planned visit of former world
boxing champion Evander Holyfield to Nigeria’s boxing camp in Benin
City, Edo State to inspire the pugilists who are preparing for the
London 2012 Olympics.
The four-time world champion is in
Nigeria on a humanitarian visit to Ogoniland to assess the level of
environmental degradation caused by years of oil exploration in the
area.
Holyfield, who is also an Olympic bronze
medallist, has promised to visit the Nigerian boxers with the aim of
encouraging them ahead of the games.
Technical director of the NBF, Idika
Nsofor, said on Monday he had yet to be informed of Holyfield’s visit
but he would welcome the American, whom he described as a role model for
the new generation of boxers.
“There’s no doubt about it, Holyfield is
one of the best boxers in the world. Even if I’m not aware of his visit
to Nigeria, his presence at our camp will be a source of inspiration to
the boxers,” Nsofor said.
