At least six people, yesterday, narrowly escaped death when a portion
of a factory at Ikeja area belonging to Haano Industry Limited
collapsed on the workers.
Fortunately, there was no casualty but four people were said to have
sustained serious injuries and immediately taken to a nearby hospital
for treatment.
When Vanguard visited the scene of the collapsed factory, located at
144, Oba Akran road, Ikeja, an eyewitness said the building caved in at
about 11:15 a.m, when the workers were off loading frozen products from
one of the nine containers brought into the country.
Vanguard also gathered that the six workers were casual workers who
were being paid based on the number of hours put in in loading and
off-loading of the cartons of fish into the cold room.
An eyewitness, Julius Anenei, who said he could not ascertain the exact number of wounded persons, put the number at 10.
He added that the building which was still under construction, was
being used as coldroom, adding: “We were surprised to hear a loud bang
and we quickly rushed out from our factory, only to discover that it was
the new building that had caved in. We quickly called for help.”
According to the safety manager of the company, Mr. Osazu Kingley, “it just happened, the collapse occurred at 10:15 am.
General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA,
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who was at the scene, said three of the
workers who sustained serious injuries, were rushed to the Critical
Rescue International, CRI, while others were taken to the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital LASUTH, for adequate treatment.
Oke-Osanyintolu said: “My team responded promptly to a distress call
received, adding “there was no mortality in the unfortunate incident.
During our course of investigation, we discovered that there were some
lapses in the construction of the building.
