Trial judge in the matter, Justice Habeeb Abiru, requested that an apology be made to Keita and N7 million damages be paid him by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, and Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye.
According to Justice Abiru, Keita’s 10 years arrest without proper arraignment constitutes an unbridled violation of his fundamental rights to dignity of his person, personal liberty and freedom of movement.
It was gathered that Keita was a ram seller at Alaba-Rago and Apongbon areas of Lagos, and was alleged to be returning from market with N177,000 in 2001, on the eve of Sallah celebration, when he was attacked by some men who made away with his money and stabbed him in the buttock.
