It was leanrt that scores of youths in Amorji-Nike, near Enugu, where the killing of the top police officer occurred, were being interrogated by the security operatives over the alleged complicity in the murder.
The residents of Nike community had earlier raised the alarm over alleged mass arrest of their youths since the alleged assassination of Asadu, last weekend, claiming that no less than 500 youths were currently being detained in Enugu State police headquarters and several police divisions in the state.
But briefing newsmen in Enugu, on Tuesday, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Tonye Ebitibituwa, said he would not give the figure of the suspects in their custody, though vowed that they would not rest on their oars until the culprits were apprehended.
“We have made arrests and we are still investigating; we will not reveal the identities of the persons we have arrested; we will also not reveal the number. As I said earlier, we are still interrogating them; they were random arrests in criminal hideouts, through the process of this investigation, we can get a clue from them and we take it up from there,” he said.
On whether the suspected killers of Asadu were robbers, assailants or kidnappers, Ebitibituwa said it was too early to make conclusions.
The police commissioner also confirmed that one policeman, Amos Marcus was killed on Rangers Avenue in Enugu by gunmen while on official duty two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, condemned the killing of Asadu and urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr M. D. Abubakar, to apprehend the culprits.
The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Honourable Zakari Mohammed, while the lawmakers observed a minute silence for the late police boss.
