Chime stated this at the opening ceremony of a two day zonal workshop on the Role of the Media and Information Managers in Emergency and Disaster Management taking place at Roban Hotel Enugu. It is organised by the South East Zonal office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, John Egbo, however, said that he believed that NEMA had come to the rescue.
“Last year, Nigeria was faced with natural disasters especially flooding which engulfed almost all the states of the federation and rendered many communities homeless. The affected states were not spared as lives, livestock, houses and other means of livelihood were lost.
“The general public was left for a long time without knowing the real cause of the disaster or what to do during and after the disaster. Many people still believe that the cause of the problem was excess water released from both dams in Nigeria and Cameron coupled with excess rain as a result of climate change.
“The warnings were taken for granted and in many occasions did not get to the people in their native languages to understand what to do.
“The bottom line is that Nigeria is never prepared to handle emergencies like in advanced countries but I truly believe that NEMA has come to the rescue. I wish to commend the Agency for organising this zonal training workshop,” he said.
