Salami’s suspension constitutional -NJC •Perjury: PDP seeks mandamus order for Salami’s trial

THE National Judicial Council (NJC), on Monday, said that the suspension of the former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami and the recommendation for his retirement to President Goodluck Jonathan were constitutional.
It also stated that the withdrawal from activities of the council by members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) serving on the council was a welcome development.
The NJC had, on August 18, suspended Salami and recommended his retirement to President Jonathan, a development which led to the appointment and swearing-in of Justice Dalhatu Adamu as the acting president of the court.

“As to what number of the members of council shall form quorum (one-third) in any of the council meetings with or without NBA council members, the court will determine,” he said.
Odukwu said the body of SANs had earlier written to the council, calling on it to hasten its deliberation on Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, Justice Salami and other justices of the Court of Appeal petitions.
He further said members of the NBA on the council had, before now, been participating in proceedings leading to the suspension and removal of some judicial officers, including the former Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Saleh, among others.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, to commence the prosecution of Justice Isa Salami for perjury.
