Senate is seeking to amend the Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, Act to provide legal backing to the ongoing registration of SIM card just as the commission confirmed new plan to revive the fixed phone otherwise known as land line
Executive Vice chairman of the NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwa, during an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Communication also vowed to shut down any service provider in Nigeria that violates any of the communication regulatory laws.
Juwah, also lamented that lack of adequate broadband technology, had resulted in the slow development of fixed lines.
He said the commission resorted to using the broadband technology because modern fixed line telephony relies on them for effective performance.
Juwah who also commented on poor quality of service blamed service providers for not putting in place adequate plans to expand their capacity to meet up with the rising number of subscribers.
He added that there was need for increased investment in infrastructure in dealing with the problem.
He also added that vandalisation of fibre optics, multiple regulations and poor power supply contributed to poor quality of service.
He said the commission would need the help of the National Assembly in removing some of these challenges, adding that there could be a legislation to deal with the issue of multiple regulation and protection of operators’ infrastructure.
Juwah also explained that the SIM card registration exercise would be necessary for security and other national data requirements, noting that the process of processing the data collected so far and uploading them had begun.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, was concerned about the improvement in service provided by operators as there had been a lot of complaints coming from subscribers.
