Jonathan cautions against threat to peace in Guinea Bissau
Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has cautioned rebels in Guinea Bissau against further actions that could threaten security and peace in that country.
ECOWAS Chairman, President Goodluck Jonathan, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday, admonished the country’s armed forces to desist from any act capable of destabilising that nation.
The development, comes on the heels of the absence of the democratically-elected President, Mr. Malam Bacai Sanha, from the country, on medical treatment in Paris.
President Jonathan said the body unequivocally condemned any actions that could destabilize Guinea-Bissau and threaten the peace and security of the sub-region as a whole.
He said: “Mindful of its protocol on democracy and good governance that prohibits unconstitutional change of government, ECOWAS calls on the people and the Armed Forces of the country to refrain from any action that is capable of endangering the constitutional order, rule of law and democratic institutions of Guinea-Bissau.”
