Ekiti bans children hawking during school hours

The Ekiti State government has outlawed hawking by children of school age during school hours.
While kicking off the registration of school age children into primaryone for the 2011/2012 academic session, at the Apostolic Nursery/Primary School,Ijero, on Tuesday, Governor Kayode Fayemisaid parents and guardians of any child ofschool age found hawking during school hours in Ekiti State would, henceforth, be made to face the wrathof the law.
Governor Fayemi, while giving the warning, reiterated the commitment of his administration to a “well-grounded education for children, with emphasis on science and technology.”
He said his declaration of free and compulsory education up to senior secondary school was part of his eight-point agenda to meet the 2015 time line on Education for all (EFA) project.
According to Fayemi, the emphasis placed on the education sector was meant to enable the state to “regain andretain its leading position as a reservoir, where knowledge will be a major exportable product to other countries of the world.”
He commended the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)for the level of success so far achieved in the education sector, addingthat it had “succeeded in enhancing the standard of primary education and making public primary schools inthe state attractive to parents to enroll their children and wards.”
