Soldiers, police rescue kidnapped Filipino, six others By Chukwudi Akasike

Seven kidnapped victims, including a Filipino, were rescued at Elele town in Ikwerre Local Government Area by security operatives in Rivers State.

Three of the victims were said to have been abducted by gunmen operating on Elele-Port Harcourt Road at about 8.30pm on Wednesday and taken to a hideout.

The State Police Public Relations officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, explained that a combined team of soldiers from the 2 Brigade in Port Harcourt, policemen and operatives of the State Security Service rescued the victims after a manhunt for the kidnappers.

Ugwuegbulam explained that the victims, who regained their freedom at about 11am on Wednesday, were in good health.

He identified some of them as Andrian Ionescu, a Filipino, and one Popoola, who are employees of SEWA Limited based in Port Harcourt.

“A joint teams of policemen from the Rivers Police Command and military men from 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt and operatives of the State Security Service rescued the victims from kidnappers operating along Elele - Port Harcourt Road.

Among items recovered, according to the police spokesman, are a Volkswagen Vento saloon car, a Toyota Prado jeep, a locally made pistol and a double-barrel gun.

Ugwuegbulam, however, noted that two suspects were arrested on Thursday in connection with the kidnap of the victims.

He said the suspects were assisting the police to apprehend other members of their gang.
