Six people, including a six-year-old boy, on Sunday, sustained
injuries when a storey building collapsed at Salvation Army area of
Ibadan, Oyo State.
It was learnt that after the rear side of a 16-room storey building
suddenly collapsed, six of the occupants, including the boy, were said
to have sustained serious injuries.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident, some of
the occupants at the main building sustained minor injuries, but others
were not so lucky, as three of them were seen languishing in pains.
They were rushed to a nearby private hospital at Oke Padre area of the metropolis.
Among those rushed to the private hospital included the six-year old
boy who was treated for wounds on the head, hands, legs and body.
As a result of the seriousness of the injury sustained, one of the
victims was said to have been rushed to the University College Hospital
(UCH), where doctors are battling to save his life.
Co-residents told newsmen that the victims were “doing some domestic
chores, being weekend, when the building suddenly collapsed on them.”
It took the combined effort of men of the Oyo State Fire Service,
officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and
sympathisers before the victims could be rescued.
One of the rescuers told the Nigerian Tribune that they could not use
a digger or axe to cut through the roof that fell on the victims to
avoid hurting them.
“We used our bare hands and spade to clear the rubble off the victims. It was very tough," he said.
The 16-room one storey building, marked W/B/IN/497 was said to have
been built about 60 years ago and was said to have been sold to another
owner about two years ago.
A source said that the new owner had given the occupants quit notice
so as to pave way for the planned renovation of the building.
The tenants were said to have ignored the quit notice until the ugly incident of yesterday.
