"Why I murdered my wife."- Bauchi Farmer

Unless he’s given a clean bill and freed by the courts, Mohammed Sabo, a farmer based in Bauchi State, might soon be cooling his heels in prison. He’s accused of being responsible for the gruesome murder of his wife of 16 years, Halima. Mohammed was recently paraded by the police in Bauchi State.

The farmer, who looked dejected while being paraded by the police, admitted killing the woman who bore him five children. He said, however, that he committed the crime in error. Weeping profusely and looking totally confused, the farmer confessed that he hacked Halima down with his hoe on his way to the farm.

The suspect, a resident of Rigar Isamiya in Darazo Local Government Area of the state, was arrested by detectives from the Bauchi State police command for allegedly killing his wife. The farmer was said to have hit Halima with his hoe two times which immediately resulted in her death. Speaking to newsmen at the police headquarters in Bauchi, Mr. Sabo admitted committing the crime, saying, however, that it was not intentional.

Sabo, who was among 16 other suspects paraded by the command, said: “Yes, I killed my wife. But I did not kill her intentionally.“When I left home for the farm that morning, I noticed that someone was following me, that there was someone coming behind me. When I looked back, I saw a woman but I did not know she was my wife. So I hit her with the hoe that I was taking to the farm. “It was very foggy then, and so I could not recognise her. That was why I hit her with the hoe that I was carrying. I hit her twice with the hoe before she collapsed and died.

“I hit her with the hoe because it was the only weapon at my disposal at that time. But it was a mistake because I did not know she was my wife. I did not expect to meet anybody on my way to the farm at that time of the morning. I had to hit her because I was scared.” When asked if he had a quarrel or had fought with his wife before the incident, Sabo said: “No, there was no quarrel or fight between us.”

On how he felt after killing his wife, Sabo replied: “I felt bad because she was the only wife I had, but God has destined that it would happen that way. I believe that is her destiny to die.” According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi State, Mohammed Barau, Mohammed Sabo was arrested based on information received from the public. Barau, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said: “We got information on the incident and our men swung into action. On getting to the place, the woman was rushed to the hospital immediately, but unfortunately she died in the hospital. We went for the husband and arrested him. The case is under investigation now.”

In a related development, the state Police Commissioner, Ikechukwu Aduba, who spoke through his deputy, Abdulmajid Ali, said his command also arrested a grandfather, Sani Hamidu who allegedly conspired with his son to kill his grandchild, Sagiru Abdullahi for ritual purposes. Aduba said Sani Hamidu and his son, after killing Abdulahi, removed the boy’s eyes, sexual organs and throat and threw the corpse inside a well where the dead body was recovered by the police. He said the grandfather committed the act at Ashura Rahama village in Toro Local Government Area of the state.

He said the son was at large while the police were still investigating the case with a view to charging the suspects to court for culpable homicide. The police boss informed reporters that the crime was punishable with death.
Aduba said policemen on routine patrol also arrested one Sabiu Sirajo who was allegedly in possession of 18 cutlasses and 14 daggers around the Peoples Club, opposite Dass Park in Bauchi. He said a combined team of police and the Neighborhood Watch Group of Ganjuwa, acting on a tip-off, arrested two suspects who confessed that they were specialists in attacking people and robbing them of their belongings.

According to the police boss, one Adigizey Abel John was arrested alongside two other men for allegedly forging his father’s cheque and forging the old man’s signature with a view to obtaining the sum of N2.2million from a new generation bank in Bauchi. The police boss said: “Abel and the two others left Jos, the family’s residence, for Bauchi for this purpose. To cover their act, they went to the MTN office, Bauchi, and swapped the MTN SIM card number 08035633925 belonging to Abel’s father.

“One of them, Hezekiah, was given the welcome back SIM bearing the same number. He later went to the bank to cash the cheque, while impersonating the father of the principal suspect,” he said. The police boss further said three suspects were arrested by men of the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) with the collaboration of people at Wunti area of Bauchi metropolis while struggling to snatch a Toyota Camry 2002 model with registration number BT 412 RSH valued at N3million.

He said one Umar Idris was also arrested in company with others now at large. Idris, he said, went to burn down a Mercedes Benz Marcopolo luxurious bus belonging to Ekwos Transport Company, Lagos. According to Aduba, the bus was going to Lagos from Yola and had an accident at Toro, adding that the transport company hired three watchmen to guard the bus.

He said the suspect confessed that one Alhaji Yunusa Garba in Jos was a co-conspirator, and that the man was a major receiver of spare parts of their stolen vehicles. He said the suspect was arrested with scraps of Marcopolo luxury bus, two vehicle radiators, two alternators and one front cover of a truck from his shop.

The police boss said all the suspects would soon be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
