NASS names 140 standing committees •Akande-Adeola emerges first female Reps’ Leader

THE National Assembly, on Thursday, constituted 140 standing committees to oversee its affairs.  While the Senate announced the names of chairmen of 56 committees
with 10 opposition members getting key positions, the House of Representatives released the names of chairmen for its 84 committees.

The South-West was the biggest loser in the configuration, losing 11 standing committees it held in the last Senate, accounting for only four in the new configuration.

All the 11 standing committees held by the South-West in the last Senate were Grade ‘A’ committees, compared to only two Grade A committees allocated to the zone by the Senate President, on Thursday.
The South-West also lost the Senate Leader, following the victory recorded by the opposition, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the zone.
The four opposition parties in all got 10 standing committee positions in the announcement made by Senator Mark on Thursday.
North-West and South-East further emerged winners in the committee configuration, with the North-West emerging chairman of committee on appropriation. Senator Mohammed Maccido, who was vice chairman of the committee on appro-priation in the last Senate, emerged the chairman on Thursday. Committee on finance went to Senator Bassey Out from Cross River. The South-East also retained the committee on works; information and media; gas; education and aviation, which it held in the last Senate.
New Senate spokesman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, while addressing newsmen, said the new set of lawmakers were ready to work for the development of the country.
According to the list of Senate committees composition as released by Mark, the Labour Party (LP) got two slots, ACN got three, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) got one, the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) got four and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) got one.
Meanwhile, history was made on Thursday, as Honourable Mulikat Akande-Adeola of the PDP from Oyo State emerged the first female House Leader of the House of Represen-tatives.
