Nigeria’s presidential system of govt, a failure —Soyinka

NOBEL Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka on Monday in Lagos faulted the presidential system of government adopted in the country, describing it as disaster, considering the substantial amount being plundered by the legislative arm of government. Making this known at a Town Hall meeting organised by the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), Professor Soyinka noted with dismay the growing rate of corruption among public office holders in the country. Corruption, according to him, is cancerous and has eaten deep into the fabrics of the society, and as antidote to its spread, there is need for total overhauling of the system. On the heinous act being perpetrated by the highly dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, Professor Soyinka warned the people from the southern axis of the country not to embark on a vengeance mission. Rather, he stressed the need for unity among the diverse ethnic groups in the country, adding that this is the only way to ensure the corporate existence of the country. He said total unity would surely bring the nation back to reckoning globally in the universal framework. The convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare stated that “our leaders have failed to respect the mandate given to them by the electorate,” adding they have ceased to realise that without the electorate exercising their franchise on them, the authorities in their ambition are powerless. He also stated that he wasn’t against deregulation, but added that there must be a proper legislation before its implementation. Other dignitaries at the event included Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, Afro beat musician Femi Kuti and Dede.
