PRELIMINARY assessment indicates that the University of Ibadan (UI) lost more than N10 billion worth of property to the floodthat ravaged Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday.
The conservative estimate represented findings by the management of the premier university, which carried out an assessment tour of theareas devastated in thenation’s premier university on Monday evening.
It was discovered during the four-hour tour, led by the vice-chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole, that the institution particularly lost more than N300 million, as the flood swept away the fishingfarm, which had been a source of internally generated revenue.
A breakdown of the findings include the washing away of the fish farm with differentspecies valued at about N300 million; over-flooding of the zoological garden, leading to the death of the animals; extensive damage to the teachingand research farm and the destruction of books estimated at about N2 billion.
In addition, many gigantic buildings, modern laboratories andexpensive equipment were destroyed by the flood, which also pulled down the university’s fence and 13 electricity poles, thus compounding the hitherto poor public power supply to the institution.
Professor Adewole, who was visibly disturbed by the disaster, decried the enormity of the damage, saying, “there is no way we can handle this alone. For us to return to our form, we certainly need government’s assistance, because this devastation is quitemassive.”
Meanwhile, the Oyo State government has said that all buildings erected in locations marked for water channels would be pulled down to avoid a recurrence of the devastation of last Friday’s flood.
The state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, made this known on Tuesday, during a special prayer session for the state at the Government House, Agodi.(Nigerian Tribune)
