The Commissioner of Police, FCT command, Mr Mike Zuokumor, on Monday, said the police was unable to gun down the suspected suicide bomber who blew himself up at the United Nations House in Abuja before he could detonate the device as the they did in Maiduguribecause the use of firearms was prohibitedin diplomatic areas.
He also disclosed that security had been beefed up at the various praying grounds in the FCT ahead of the Eid-El-Fitri festival.
According to Zuokumor, other areas where security had been tightened include all foreign missions in Abuja, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, the federal secretariat and other places regarded as flash points.
The FCT police boss who briefed journalists after a joint security meeting chaired by the Minister of FCT, SenatorBala Mohammed, statedthat the police headquarters had started upgrading the training of its personnel to face the new challenge.
He noted that what was necessary was training and confidence and cooperation from members of the public as according to him, “we must all come together, work together and secure oursociety.”
He said further, “what happened at the UN building is the action of a terrorist, a suicide bomber. And that is why the FCT decided topartner with the police to make sure we provide all the infrastructure in the FCT.
“Most of the embassiesare being guided by security personnel, and the airport is being strengthened with security personnel.”(Nigerian Tribune)
